This is not fiberglass, it is the carved Styrofoam base, before fiber glassing, and the waist was about 18 feet, not 20 yards.  Thanks to the hands of many, it's still in use today.  He was animated so that his arm would wave, head turn and nod, and mouth open and close via pneumatics.
