Older Paintings 1
Welcome to my portfolio. Here you’ll find a selection of my work. Works on this page are Pre 2000.

This painting was done my senior year at ECU(1983-84). It was in a show were it won the "purchase award", and when I left ECU it was hanging in Mendenhall Student Center. I'm not sure of it's location now. (Sold, collection of East Carolina University)
30x40" Oil and acrylic on canvas.

"The Purple Dragon", painted in 1983 at ECU, was in a show at the Greenville Museum of Art, were it hung next to a Picasso. I though that was pretty cool. I still have it hanging in my studio.
20x20" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

This panting has a rearranged background of Venice. A statue of a unknown woman on a pedestal and architectural elements in the foreground. (Sold, private collection)
~40x60" Oil on Canvas

This is a painting of my younger brother Jay and his college roommate Nick. My brother, being a lefty made for good symmetry. You can see their faces are reflected in the background on the top and bottom (~1986). Location unknown.
20x20" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

I regret I do not have a better photo of this painting. It was painted in 1983 at ECU. Needless to say, it was pre digital photography and is the best picture I have. It was way more colorful and detailed. Sold through a gallery in Raleigh around 1986, location unknown.
46x72" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

This was a commission piece for a friend of a friend. Needless to say, she had a fine body. When doing a commission piece I've always painted two at the same time to make sure I please the clients needs. She chose the one more simple, I kept the one more complex.
24x36" Oil on Canvas
This was the second version of this painting. I still have it today. I'm not sure of where the statue of the animal came from.
24x36" Oil on Canvas

"The Lady at the Left" was painted in 1983-84. It was published in the ECU art magazine in 1983. Always been one of my favorite paintings. You can see the Lady at the Left's bottom in the circle and the negative space between her torso and arm above. Sold through a gallery in Raleigh NC around 1987. The painting reemerged in my life around year 2000 while working for the N.C. Forest Service. I was purchasing some advertising materials from a company called Ads Infinitum. While in the owners office, there it was, hanging on her wall. Having not been signed, she did not know I was the artist. Needless to say we had a great discussion of the origins and details of the painting.
18x24" Oil on Wood Panel

This painting was inspired by an etching by Albrect Durer call "Melancholia" from 1514. One of my favorite artists. I was drawing a blank of what I wanted to paint. So, this etching came to mind to solve my problem. "My solution to Melancholia" came to be. One of the most fascinating things of Durer's composition is his "magic cube" of numbers over the seated guys head. Any way you add the numbers, vertically, horizontally, diagonally and even squares, they all add up to 34. My exwife Debbie is standing on the crystal of amathist, while I am seated in the chair.
44x60 Oil on Canvas

"Monumental Erosion" This was a commission I received after a large show at Artspace in Raleigh NC. I did two versions of this also. This is the one he chose. Sounds relevant in today's world.
40x60" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

"Optical Rendering, Graphical Acronym, Symbols and Media" Painted around 1987, I entered it into a jurried show, and did not get excepted. I entered it into another show a few month later at the Wake Visual Arts Association and it won 1st Place in Show.
Redemption! Sold through a gallery in Raleigh NC.
18x32" Oil on wood panel

"My View on Elm Street" Probably pained around 1982 while at ECU. Our apartments front window looked at a brick wall. So, I used the plant in the foreground to give it some interest.
~24x30" Pencil, Acrylic and Oil on Illustration Board

Untitled... This painting was entered into the annual show of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society around 1990. It won the purchase award from Wachovia Bank, and is now in their collection.
36x50" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

"Metamorphosis" There are lots of elements in this painting from left to right and right to left. The duck and the dove both metamophisize down to a green ball. The leaves change into floor tiles. Things get more realistic moving to the right.
48x72" Oil on Canvas

"What a Tangled Web We Weave When Trying to Deceive". Sorry for the poor quality photo before digital. This was a larger old painting, sold through a Raleigh gallery around 1992.
48x72" Oil on Canvas

"Two Women, Obscured by Leaves" Painted around 1987, this is just a simple painting with interesting techniques.
12x16" Oil on Panel

This is just the center portion of a larger painting. A girlfriend of mine was off to the left under the next arch. I can not find a complete image of this. So, this is just a self portrait of my back at the time.
36x48" Oil on Canvas

"Old Light, Illuminating the future" Included in this composition, is an older painting from around 1987. I used that, incorporated into a larger composition to create this.
40x60" Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

At this time I was heavily into architecture. These two paintings are facades for villas I thought would be interesting. Both sold through galleries in Raleigh in the early 1990's.
~30x48" Acrylic on Canvas
"Four Leaves 1" 1986 Sold
14x20" Oil on Panel

"Villa Chentinale" This was also a commission piece. Again, I did two versions. I still have the second, he selected this version. His family used to rent this villa in Tuscany and wanted a painting of it. Around 1989.
